April 22 marks the 48th annual Earth Day celebration. It’s grown from small teach-ins at colleges and universities to a worldwide movement.
This year’s theme is “End Plastic Pollution,” and Earth Day Network wants to change the way the world views and uses plastics. Science Magazine estimates there is more than 6.3 billion tons of plastic pollution in the world. Nine percent is recycled, 12 percent incinerated but 79 percent is in a landfill or left in nature.
